CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENVIRONMENT

Podstrana is a country in Central Dalmatia, located between the city of Split and the
country of Dugi Rat,  below the Perun mountin. Perun is a ridge of the Mosor mountain range. The top of Perun
is the tallest and most prominent location on the mountain. It rises about 450 meters above sea level with the tallest peak
Kriz (533 meters). Along the sea shore and the lower part of the river Znovnica one can find stone deposits from
the alluvial age. The cost is mostly made of pebbles and in some areas sand.  The average temperature of the upper
sea level by Podstrana is 17,5 C with the summer months varying between 23 and 24 C. Most of the steep mountain
slopes are bare but grass and small bushes of aromatic plants, as well as a sporadic alpine pine are also present.
The mountain plateau has grass and evegreen bushes growing on its rocky surfaces.
The climate in Podstrana is similar to that of Split. The average air temperature is 16 C. January is usually the coldest
month with an average temperature of 7,7 C while the warmest month July has an average temperature of 25,6 C.
The maximum annual air temperature (21,5 to 38,6 C) can be measured in July and August.
The average yearly rain fall is 837,2 mm. The most precipitation falls in December and the least in the July.
These conditions are not very favourable for farmers, but they are ideal for tourists and the tourism.
The annual number of sunny hours in this region is 2700, about 7,3 hours per day. The southern warm wind, known as Jugo
and the cold wind, known as Bura, are more frequent here than in Split. The most pleasant  of all winds, Maestral
is common in the summer.The road leading through Podstrana and along Poljica creates favourable conditions for
the development of settlements such as:Strozanac, Grljevac, St.Martina and Mutogras.

TRANSPORTATION

Podstrana has accessible means of transportation to Split, Omis and other coastal cities. The public transportation company
Promet and Astra offer daily routes to Split and Omis. On weekdays buses run every 20 minutes from
4.00 to 24.00 hours, and on Sunday and holidays every 30 minutes from 5.00 to 24.00 hours.
There are also inter city busses going to Omis, Makarska, Ploce and Dubrovnik, all of which stop in Podstrana.
it is only 10 km away from Split's terminal, train station and main port. It is only 35 km away from Split's
airport Resnik. Numerous Ferry lines run from Split to the town on the Dalmatian island, such as: Supetar (Island Brac),
Stari Grad (Island Hvar) and Vis (Island Vis). The ferry to Sumartin (Island Brac) leaves from Makarska, and the
one to Sucuraj (Island Hvar) departs from Drvenik.
